Peak popularity: Winter 2010 - Spring 2011 Amnesia itself, largely because of the reactionary videos surrounding it, continues to be a widely discussed title among gamers. The reactionary meme, while not as popular as it was in early 2011, still had an influence on the horror gaming community and widely contributed to the sales of the game.

While the very peak of Amnesia's popularity has eased off, players still regularly upload their experiences of the game and reactions. After seeing it, many other people bought the game and posted their own humorous reactions and playthroughs on YouTube.

Receiving around 4 million views, it became a huge unintentional advertisement for Amnesia due to its hilarity and showcasing of the game's horror elements.

The most popular video was made sometime in the winter of 2010 (the original recording was removed due to copyright infringement, but later reuploaded by other users ). The game was relatively unheard of at first, but began to catch on when certain reactionary videos went up on YouTube. On September 8th, 2010, indie developers at Frictional Games released their newest horror title, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The video shows his most frightened moments as he frantically cries, screams and struggles to escape from the monster while his friends laugh over Skype. The original, most popular reactionary video features the playthrough of a college-aged male as he's talking on Skype with friends. Subtitles for commentary may be implemented as well. The players often turn on their webcam while playing, so viewers can see their facial expressions during scary scenes. The viral structure features players recording their experience of the game, along with their frightened reactions. This viral sensation popped up within the gaming community after the release of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a horror title now popularized as the scariest game ever made.
